WLCSD Board of Education approves 5-year extension to superintendent’s contract

The Walled Lake Consolidated School District’s Board of Education unanimously approved a 5-year contract extension for Superintendent Ken Gutman at its May 4 meeting.

Gutman’s salary is $221,000. According to Judy Evola, director of community relations and marketing, “The contract calls for a 1.5 percent step; however, Mr. Gutman will take the same concessions as the rest of the district staff as he has done every year.”

Evola added, “He has voluntarily given concessions of $50,000 since he has been with the district.

Board of Education President Christopher Titus said, “The action taken at the last board meeting regarding Mr. Gutman’s contract was a unanimous endorsement of our continued faith in his abilities to lead the district.”

Gutman was pleased with the decision, saying, “I’m honored to be able to be part of this community. This community values education and doesn’t just talk about it.”

He added, “Research shows that the longer a superintendent is in his or her position, that the stability provides educational success. I know the real work happens in the schools, and I’m proud to be able to support that in any way I can.”
