Comedy fundraiser to aid in feeding food-insecure HVS students
“A Magical Night of Comedy” fundraiser, featuring family comedy by Rocky LaPorte, will help the Huron Valley Optimist Club keep food-insecure Huron Valley students fed over weekends and holidays through its Blessings in a Backpack program.
The event takes place from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 25 in the 59 West Banquet Hall. It’s the second annual comedy night fundraiser for the program.
Why LaPorte? “He’s Hollywood material. Rocky was on ‘Cheers.’ He also was in ‘The Shaggy Dog’ with Tim Allen. He’s an interesting character. He’s got quite a life history; it includes things like truck driving,” said Pam Barckholtz, committee member for the event and administrative coordinator for Blessings in a Backpack. “He’s used to performing for sell-out crowds. We’d like to hit at least what we did last year, which was 210.”
Blessings in a Backpack was adopted in December 2014. On an average weekend, backpacks are filled with six balanced meals to get food-insecure kids through the weekend. Extra backpacks are included for long weekends or vacations. The program started with Brooks Elementary, and has since expanded to Highland, Johnson and Oxbow elementaries.
“Next year, we’re going to expand it even more,” enthused Barckholtz.
T.he program has been a great success. She explained, “School attendance improves in 60 percent of children who receive this benefit, and 60 percent do not get in trouble as much in school. Those are wonderful outcomes.”
Tickets are available until the night of the event. “We’ll take walk-ins as long as we’re allowed to.”
Tickets are $500 for a table of eight, or $62.50 each. Individuals pay $75; two tickets are $135.
Tickets may be picked up in Highland at Veterinary Care Specialists or Kids in motion, requested via email at firstname.lastname@example.org, or purchased online at www.google.com/amp/s/ www.eventbrite.com/e/a-magical-comedy-night-tickets 31795722863/amp.
