Benefit to support Commerce Twp. man with cancer Tuesday at Uptown Grille

A group of neighbors in Commerce Township have joined together to support a local man battling Dave and Laura Jenks.Dave and Laura Jenks.pancreatic cancer.

A fundraiser to support Dave Jenks will be held Tuesday, March 21 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Uptown Grille in Commerce Township. The evening will include a pizza-spaghetti dinner with soft drinks and cash bar, raffles, auctions, and much more.

Proceeds from the event will support the medical expenses of Dave and Laura Jenks of Commerce Township. Dave, a self-employed carpenter, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April of 2016. So far, his journey has included five rounds of heavy chemotherapy, a round of radiation and surgery. He is currently undergoing eight additional rounds of aggressive chemotherapy.

His surgery resulted in the loss of his spleen, a third of his stomach, some intestine, a bile duct and his entire pancreas.

“Amazingly, it was never discussed what the consequences could be if he had to have his whole pancreas removed. It’s been no small learning curve,” Laura said. “Along with that, he now has to take multiple enzyme pills … in varying doses with every meal he eats. These pills aid in digestion because without a pancreas, he can’t actually absorb any nutrients from what he eats. If he doesn’t have those enzyme pills, he could basically eat three square meals a day and slowly starve to death!”

According to Laura, Dave’s current health insurance does not cover the $1,200 cost of a 30-day supply of the enzyme pills he needs.

“We’re doing everything we can to stay afloat,” she continued. “We know we can recover when Dave gets back to work, but the struggle is getting greater as time goes on.”

Tickets for Tuesday’s event are $25 each and can be purchased at the door (cash only.) Prizes up for grabs include four Detroit Tiger’s tickets and parking pass, a Greektown Casino package, sports memorabilia, various gift baskets, and much more.

“[Dave and Laura’s] attitude has been really positive,” event organizer Sharon Napiwocki said. “We’re all hoping that if we can help them out, then [Dave] can focus on his positive energy and healing. So much of this battle is mind over matter and having a positive attitude makes so much of a difference in getting better.”
