Vikings continue banner season on the mat with district title

The Walled Lake Central wrestling team added another team accolade to its collection last week, claiming the district title with a 66-9 victory over Bloomfield Hills.

The Vikings (16-6, 5-0 KLAA North) also won the KLAA North Division crown and the Lakes Conference championship. Before the Vikings faced the Black Hawks in the district final, Central dominated West Bloomfield 70-6 in the semi-final. Central was led by three-time state champion Ben Freeman (145), Nick Freeman (140) and Warren Stanfield (135.) Posting victories over Bloomfield Hills in the district final were Stanfield (135), Nick Onwenu (189), Nick Freeman (140), Ben Freeman (145), Liam Kinjorski (152), Josh Jerrigan (160), Max Heckman (285) and TJ Daugherty (103.)

On Saturday, February 11, the Vikings participated in the Division 1 District Wrestling Tournament, which was held at Birmingham Groves. Central came away with five individual district champions. Winning individual titles for the Vikings were TJ Daugherty (103), Warren Stanfield (130), Nick Freeman (135), Ben Freeman (140) and Connor Merchant (215.)

With the postseason heating up, Coach Al Freeman and the Vikings hope to add more championships to the team’s collection.
