Preserving Memories

Everyone has a story to share. Record a conversation with a loved one or a friend and get a cd to keep. Inspired by Story Corps, this ongoing project promotes listening as an act of love. Suggested questions are available at the White Lake Township Library. Call 248-698-4942 ext. 2 to schedule a 40-minute time slot, subject to staff availability.

Mav Jam WheelHouse Charity Concert May 25

Members of the community are invited to gather in Milford Central Park for an evening of fun, food and live music during the Mav Jam, a local fundraiser benefiting the Milford High School football program. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward maintaining the quality and safety of the equipment, team building retreats and football camp. Food, t-shirts and a 50/50 raffle will be available for purchase, while guests enjoy a free concert by WheelHouse. Concessions open at 5 p.m. followed by a pep rally hosted by the Milford cheerleading team and Center Stage, the school’s music program. Wheelhouse will take the stage from 7 to 10 p.m.

Back to School Clothing Drive May 25

Community Sharing is in need of the following items for the annual Back to School clothing drive, to be held August 24 at Community Sharing inside Duck Lake Center: New or gently used clothes and shoes in sizes 5T to adult, ages 5 to 18. We are also requesting donations of (new only, please) socks, undergarments and personal hygiene products, including deodorant, hair care and personal hygiene products, body wash and shaving items. Look for donation bins and more information coming soon all over town! Back to school clothing drive kick-off event will be held May 25 at the Milford Farmers Market from 3 to 8 p.m. Free and fun children’s crafts.

Movie Matinee May 27

Walled Lake Memorial Day Parade May 29

The City of Walled Lake Parks & Recreation Commission is sponsoring their annual Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 29. The event will start promptly at 11 a.m. on East Walled Lake Drive to North Pontiac Trail and turn onto East West Maple where the parade will end at city hall for a short service commemorating veterans. LaFontaine Family Amphitheater Season Opener June 1

Calling music lovers of all ages, join us in downtown Milford for the kick-off of the Summer Concert Series and season opener of the LaFontaine Family Amphitheater. The community is invited to sit back and relax, or get up and dance to the sounds of Power Play Detroit. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and blankets to Central Park for an evening of camaraderie and live outdoor music. The Summer Concert Series brings live music to Central Park each Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. June 1 through August 20.

“Art Under Pressure, Intaglio Works” Gallery Opening June 1

“Art Under Pressure, Intaglio Works” by Craig Fisher will be featured in a free gallery reception. The event includes a chance to meet the artist while enjoying light refreshments. June 2 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Huron Valley Council for the Arts (205 W. Livingston Road, Highland.)

Spaghetti Dinner June 2

Homemade meat or marinara spaghetti sauce, garlic bread, salad, beverage and dessert; $7. Proceeds benefit the Milford Senior Center. Held the first Friday of the month through June. Friends of the Library Book Sale June 3

The Friends of the White Lake Township Library will hold their book sale Saturday, June 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the White Lake Township Library.

Adult Movie Matinee June 8

This month’s film, “Lion” starring Dev Patel, Rooney Mara, Nicole Kidman, Sunny Pawar and David Wenham. The film follows a five-year-old Indian boy who gets lost on the streets of Calcutta. He survives many challenges before being adopted by a couple in Australia. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family. Please register to ensure a seat; free popcorn! Day of Play at Brighton Recreation Area June 10

The Day of Play will introduce you to a new program offered called “Mornings in the Park” developed to welcome children/families of all individuals with special needs to experience recreation in the great outdoors. Activities include canoeing, archery, nature exploration, fishing, horseback riding and much more. Food and refreshments will be provided. HV Optimists’ Fishing Derby June 10

Join this great event to show off your child’s fishing skills! Winners will receive fishing certificate and awards by total length of the fish caught. Limit 50 children per age group. Read and Discuss June 13

This month’s book, “The Summer Before the War” by Helen Simonson, looks at the political and social climate of England before the start of WWI. Adults of all ages are invited to join White Lake’s book group. Discussion is led by Oakland Community College professor emerita Sandra Sutherland. Books, including large print and audio versions, will be available one month prior to the meeting. Pick-up your copy at the information desk. Moo Canoe June 21

Take a scenic hayride, paddle a beautiful stretch of the Huron River. Picnic, play games and relax under shade trees at the water’s edge.
